Dr Alok Kumar Bhuwan: A Legacy of Service and Compassion
Dr. Alok’s life journey is deeply rooted in a rich family history. He is a descendant of Mandan Mishra, a contemporary of the revered philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, who lived around 800 BC. This lineage instilled in him a deep respect for knowledge and a commitment to serving others.
His father, the late Vaidya Pandit Kailash Mishra, also known as “Deenbandhu” (Friend of the Poor), dedicated his life to serving the underprivileged in remote areas of Bihar. Witnessing his father’s unwavering dedication to the well-being of others undoubtedly shaped Dr. Bhuwan’s sense of social justice and his unwavering commitment to inclusion.
Dr. Alok’s mother, Indu Devi, is a pillar of spiritual guidance and unwavering support. Her strong faith and connection to Dr. Alok give him a powerful foundation. He is also fortunate to have a supportive and accomplished sister, Smt Bina Jha, a senior solicitor in the Arariya District Court, and two elder brothers.
Dr. Alok’s wife, Indira Alok, is a cornerstone of his mission. As the Principal of Manovikas School for Inclusion, she shares his vision and works tirelessly alongside him. Their daughter, Adya, continues the family legacy of excellence by pursuing medical education at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
Dr. Alok’s journey began in 1975 in Purnea, Bihar. Nurtured by his parents’ love and his grandparents’ wisdom, his foundation for a compassionate life was laid. In 1979, he embarked on his educational path at Aadrash Madhya Vidyalaya, Barhara Kothi. His first teacher, Sh Vedanand Mishra, was his close relative and uncle. Sh Mishra’s guidance was pivotal in shaping Dr Bhuwan’s early development, encouraging him to see the world from a broader perspective and fostering a love for learning.
Life took a turn in 1985 when Dr. Bhuwan’s father’s transfer necessitated a shift to Sarvodaya Buniyadi Vidyalaya, Chandi Rajiganj, Ranipatra. This school, run under the Sarvodaya Ashram, embodied the very essence of “Sarvodaya,” meaning “Universal Uplift” or “Progress of All.” This early exposure to the ideals of inclusivity would undoubtedly have a lasting impact on Dr. Bhuwan’s life and future work.

In the energetic chaos of 8th grade, Dr. Alok Kumar Bhuwan’s path to inclusion began with an unexpected turn. His math teacher, recognising potential beyond youthful exuberance, used an unconventional method. One day, Alok was called “outstanding” and stationed outside the classroom. This led him to a chance encounter that would spark his life’s mission. Witnessing the ostracisation of a boy with disabilities, Alok ignited a passion for inclusivity. His journey took him to the National Institute for the Empowerment of Intellectual Disabilities, and in 1997, he founded Manovikas, a beacon of opportunity for children with disabilities.
